Born in 1889, Virgil was the son of James and Alice Dunn Smith. He was a trackman with the B&O Railroad for 45 years, retiring in 1956. He was also employed at Dewey Brothers and served as village Fire Chief. He was member of Pithian Lodge No. 373, 1OOF and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way.
