Organizations come in many forms. Some are based on shared experiences such as veterans organizations. Some are based on shared causes such as charitable organizations. Another popular type of organization in the early 1900's were those formed mainly for social reasons. 

Before mass media and convenient transportation these were an important way to connect with other people socially who had similar interests.
