Collection: Bates Canning Company
Bates Canning Company was also known as H.G. Bates Canning, H.C. Canning Company and C.E. Canning Company depending on which Bates family member was controlling the company at the time.
The company's main business was canning corn and tomatoes.
"The H.G. Bates Canning Company was founded by H. G. Bates in the late 1890's at a location near the N. Broadway bridge over Second Creek.
The late Chester Everett (C.E.) Bates, son of the founder, assumed operations of the company in 1911 and operated it at the old location until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. The firm then constructed the present plant on Route 28 at the west corporation line.
The Bates Canning Co. has specialized in sweet corn for the past several years and has averaged a pack of 50,000 cases. Approximately 100 persons have been employed each year during the canning season."
